It’s been quite a while since I finished university and, to be honest, I had almost forgotten what it feels like to sit in an auditorium with fellow students and listen to a lecture. Therefore, I was really excited to accompany Jan Brecht, CIO of the adidas Group, to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg only a few days ago. Together with two of his senior managers, Ingo Winterhoff and Christian Martin, Jan held an exceptional lecture, providing insights into “New Retail Technologies”.

What an exciting day! Being among the winners of the CeBIT Innovation Award 2013 and receiving the “bronze medal” from the German Secretary of Education and Research, Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka, for our concept “Next Generation Fashion Store” is indeed an overwhelming experience. The project illustrates very well that IT is gaining more and more importance in business as it can make a real difference when it comes to competitive advantage.
When I joined the adidas Group Retail team, the only retail experience I had was from the long shopping marathons I ran in the high streets of several cities.
With a network of more than 2,400 own retail stores, the adidas Group is on its way to becoming one of the top retailers in the world. Getting to know the different aspects of this huge and dynamic business is not an easy task…
After attending introduction meetings, listening to presentations and reading many reports, my boss asked me: ”Would you like to spend a week in one of our retail stores?” -“Wow,” I thought, -“this is probably the quickest and most effective way to understand what retail stands for at the adidas Group!” And, without hesitation, I applied for the ‘One Week in A Store’ Program.
To shine means “to be bright or to reflect light”. For us, SHINE is about how we recruit, enable, motivate, evaluate and develop retail talent. It is a framework that provides our employees with career opportunities, development guidance and robust training programs to help them build their future—or “shine”—in retail with the adidas Group.
SHINE is arguably the most comprehensive framework driving human performance at work ever built in the company. Since its launch in the fall of 2010, SHINE has touched thousands of employees (over half of the entire adidas Group) in all our stores around the world. And it’s making an impact!
A few weeks ago, we already informed you about our “new kid in town”, the fast fashion label adidas NEO. Since the test phase started in February, adidas has already launched six own NEO retail stores across Germany. Hamburg was first, followed by Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Oberhausen, and today the Nuremberg store has finally opened its doors to consumers (‘Breite Gasse 46′ in the heart of Nuremberg). Cologne and Stuttgart will follow in the next weeks. So we thought this is the right time to introduce you to some members of the NEO team.
