University of Loughborough honours Herbert Hainer

Striving for innovation has ever been an integral value of adidas since Adi Dassler decided to provide athletes with the best possible equipment. But innovation is not only about product concepts such as the adidas F50 adizero. Sometimes it’s also about creatively improving the way how you create products and how to make most out of the circumstances. Adi Dassler for example created a legendary treadmill apparatus (see picture) to generate energy to operate machines by pedal power before electricity was generated in 1923.

adidas’ pursuit of innovation is one of the key factors which is strengthening our market position in the sporting goods industry. Read on to learn how this pursuit is linked to a decoration Herbert Hainer was honoured with yesterday.

What makes a great plan reality (and what we can learn from adidas Group’s Route 2015)

What makes a great plan reality (and what we can learn from adidas Group’s Route 2015)

John Lennon once said: „Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.“ Does this imply that we are all, more or less, just reacting and that it makes no sense to plan the future at all? Well, it’s certainly debatable. Personally, I prefer to have at least one focus to follow and believe in (maybe that’s because I am German). There is proof for the fact that having a plan can work out very well. It’s almost two years since the adidas Group announced its five-year strategic business plan Route 2015. It is a very detailed and comprehensive piece of work. Last Friday, at an investor event at the TaylorMade-adidas Golf headquarters in Carlsbad, California, Herbert Hainer confirmed and reinforced the adidas Group’s long-term financial targets, as outlined in this plan. During this event, Herbert Hainer said: “Everything I have seen over the past 20 months has only reinforced my confidence that Route 2015 will be an overwhelming success.” The upside the adidas Group envisions from Route 2015 and beyond is tremendous.
I don’t want to go into the details of the update here (you can get more detailed information on the key findings here and here). But the announcement made me wonder what it takes to succeed with a plan and which key attributes drive success. I’ll start by sharing my thoughts with you on what you can potentially learn from the adidas Group’s journey ‘Route 2015’, but I hope to get your insights afterwards, too.

A winning performance: Herbert Hainer on London 2012 and the adidas Group’s financial results

A winning performance: Herbert Hainer on London 2012 and the adidas Group’s financial results

adidas has a very long, unique and authentic history with modern Olympics: Adi Dassler’s shoes were worn for the first time at the Olympic Games back in 1928. Today, the Olympic Games are still very important to the adidas Group; not only as a valuable platform to present the adidas brand, its products and innovations to a global audience but also because the Olympics echo the values of our Group: performance, passion, integrity and diversity. Therefore and to give a taste of the significant role the adidas Group plays in global sports, our CEO Herbert Hainer reported today directly from the ground of the London Olympics on the adidas Group’s first half 2012 results.

The results show that the adidas Group delivered another winning financial performance in this period - despite all that is going on from a macroeconomic and competitive perspective. In a nutshell we added one billion to our top-line year-on-year. In the following video Herbert Hainer shares some background on this topic and on how these Olympics are benefiting our Group. Just to give you an example: Herbert Hainer revealed today that, from a commercial perspective, this will be the most successful Games we have ever had, with Olympic licence product sales up 250% compared to Beijing. In the video Herbert Hainer also explains why he’d be awarding adidas with a gold medal.
