Sustainable Apparel Coalition launches Higg Index

Sustainable Apparel Coalition launches Higg Index

Let’s assume you’re a coach and you want your team to get as fit as it can possibly be. You strongly believe in fitness being your game changer. What do you do? First of all you’d probably want to evaluate what your individual team members’ strengths and weaknesses are. But therefore you’d have to measure various performance aspects of your athletes – strength, endurance, flexibility etc. This is exactly the course of action we went for, after setting ourselves the goal of improving the environmental impact of our products, suppliers and brands: we decided that it would be necessary to index the parameters of environmental friendliness in the supply chain (read more about this topic here). However, we knew from the very start that our challenge would be far more complex than measuring speed or power as aspects of fitness. We, this is an industry wide group of brands called the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) and the index we are talking about was launched just yesterday; it is called the Higg Index – it’s one of our game changers.

Raise your cups for a stunning and ecological idea

Raise your cups for a stunning and ecological idea

This morning, when I was driving to work, I was listening to a song in the radio which is about all the stuff in life which is somehow not appropriate but which is still a lot of fun to do. This might be buying the fuel-guzzling, overpowered car which makes you smile when you tip on the accelerator pedal. It also might be hearing your favourite song in deafening loudness until you get to know your neighbours. One thing amongst these “unfortunately great” things in my life is coffee-to-go. The coffee bars here at the World of Sports sell delicious coffee and thus it happens quite frequently that I grab a coffee on my way to the next meeting. However, what I don’t like is the bad conscience which comes along with thinking about the environmental impact of paper cups. But our “Green Company” team came up with a stunning solution now.

The balance of economic and ecological targets

The balance of economic and ecological targets

To what extend are companies and politics able to reconcile an ecological consciousness while at the same time striving to reach growth targets? Are companies which are committed to sustainable goals in reality just doing “Green Washing”? These are some of the topics which were discussed in Berlin a couple of weeks ago following an invite from German Sunday newspaper “Welt am Sonntag”. Participants of the discussion included the German Federal Environment Minister, Dr. Norbert Röttgen, the CEO of the German DAX-company Henkel, Kasper Rorsted and adidas Group’s CEO, Herbert Hainer together with some journalists from Welt am Sonntag. As the article (read it here - in German only) was published in yesterday’s newspaper, I’d like to share with you some of the key topics which came up during the discussion as well as some background information. And maybe you want to share your thoughts on this topic with us, too.
