Today, Greenpeace International has published the ‘Leadership Board (LSB)’, an evaluation of apparel brands’ commitments, progress and achievements in the elimination and reduction of hazardous chemicals in their global supply chains.
This initiative is part of a broader campaign run by Greenpeace International to demand consumer brands apply pressure to the chemicals industry and downstream manufacturers to eliminate all hazardous chemicals from all pathways across all supply tiers. From our point of view, Greenpeace’s ranking is not based on the facts, as we strictly adhere to the commitment given to Greenpeace when the Detox campaign was launched.
The adidas Group is globally recognised as a leader in environmental sustainability. In fact, we have been ranked by the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE), with whom Greenpeace has partnered, as one of the four top performing brands in our industry in China.
While we continue with our own efforts in reducing the use and discharge of chemicals within our supply base to a minimum, collaborative actions within the sportswear and apparel industry will gain greater leverage in improving the environmental performance of global supply chains. This is why the adidas Group joined a group of brands that developed a joint roadmap towards zero discharge of hazardous chemicals (ZDHC) in the supply chain by 2020. Our commitment to the Joint Road Map is rooted in our firm believe that the goal of ‘Zero Discharge’ demands collective action of the industry, regulators and other stakeholders. Furthermore the elimination of hazardous chemicals does need collaboration and partnership with our industry peers, but also a holistic and integrated approach including all actors in our industry. You see, we strictly adhere to the commitment given to Greenpeace.
