Welcome to the adidas group blog

This blog's objective is to give you personal insights into our business in sports.

Hi, my name is Kristina. I am 24 years old and I am a participant in the Functional Trainee Program in the field of Human Resources within the adidas Group. An integral part of the program is the assignment abroad and today I would like to share with you my experiences from my assignment abroad in the regional office in Panama.

How did I end up being adidas Trainee in Panama?

I joined the adidas Group in November 2010 as a Functional Trainee in the field of Human Resources. Currently, we are also searching for my successor in the program. The application phase has been closed and now the phone interviews and the assessment centre are next in the process.

Directly when I started my trainee program I was thinking of where to go for my assignment abroad. Panama was always one of my top 3 countries, because I have never been to Latin America and I thought this would be a great opportunity to get to know a new culture. Lucky me, the regional HR team from Panama contacted our future talent programs team at the beginning of 2011, asking for support in some projects. Within a week, everything was set and my assignment abroad was fixed for September until December.

The first impression was overwhelming!

I landed in Panama on a Friday night and while driving to the city I saw all the lights of the skyscrapers, and my first impression was “Wow! That’s the place where you will live for the next months”. I stayed in a great apartment and the view over the city from 32nd floor was unbelievable, and during the first minutes in my apartment I was speechless and kept asking myself “is this real?”

My time in Panama was an amazing experience. My team in the regional office was fantastic. I was part of many projects and got an insight into the work of the regional office – being the link between the countries and our global teams, which was sometimes quite challenging. I really enjoyed working in the Panama office. Our employees there are just like at headquarters in Germany, very international, and as the office is much smaller than the headquarters, you can better interact with other departments, whereas at headquarters you sometimes even have to change location to meet your counterpart. My assignment abroad gave me the chance to get to know another country, culture, working style and, of course, to extend my network within the adidas Group. My biggest learning was definitely seeing the interaction between countries, regional office and our global headquarters.

But not only the working experience counts!

Besides work, Panama has a lot of interesting areas to discover; especially the Panama Canal is a must when you are in Panama City. Having the possibility to enjoy the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea on the same day is something really special. There are, for example, the islands of San Blas or the archipelago Bocas del Toro with their white beaches which are worth a trip.

All in all, I can say it has been an amazing experience being abroad in Panama and I am really glad that the Functional Trainee Program of the adidas Group includes going abroad.

When you are thinking of your future career after your graduation from university I can really recommend going on our career site, checking out the future talent section and applying for the Functional Trainee Program!
